Dish Network Software Update Scam
Scammers posing as employees of the popular satellite service are charging victims for a fake software update.
Who Is It Targeting: Dish Network customers
What Is It: Phony software update
What Are They After: Callers posing as Dish Network employees and using spoofed caller ID info to look legitimate have reached out to actual customers, informing them that their software needs to be updated. They even walk the customer through the onscreen process, then inform them they need to pay for the update in order to keep their systems working properly.
If you ever contacted by someone claiming to work for any of your household utilities, informing you of the need to update, verify your personal data, or letting you know that your rates are increasing, it may be a scam.
How Can You Avoid It:
- If someone calls you about your account, never give out personal information or payment.
- If you’re asked to upgrade your system or verify your account, hang up and call the company directly for information.
