Distraction Scams

Thieves wait until your busy day takes over, stealing from you while your focus is elsewhere.

Who Is It Targeting: Holiday shoppers

What Is It:  Distraction scam

What Are They After: Thieves wait until you’re distracted to steal from you, your handbag or briefcase, or your car. While you’re focused on getting gas, paying for your groceries, or another task or errand, they take advantage of your lack of attention to reach into your bag or vehicle to steal your wallet or valuables.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • When you’re out running errands, keep your handbag or briefcase close to you and zipped, and make sure your vehicle doors locked.
  • Put away your cell phone or shopping list in order to make sure you’re aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • If you see someone suspicious, don’t try to engage, but remove yourself to a safe location.

If you think you may be a victim of identity theft, contact the Identity Theft Resource Center for toll-free, no-cost assistance at (888) 400-5530.
