Google Business Search Scam

Businesses are being targeted by scammers claiming their website domain name is out-of-date and must be updated.

Who Is It Targeting: Businesses with websites

What Is It:  Scammers are pretending to represent Google’s business listing or a similar service and alerting businesses that their domain needs to be updated in order to keep their spot in Google search rankings. Scammers then ask the business for their Google password, exposing them to fraud, and sometimes even request payment for their fake services.

What Are They After: Account information, money

How Can You Avoid It:

  • Google does not charge for inclusion in Google Search. They also do not cold call business with offers to improve their search rankings.
  • Never provide your password or verification code to an unsolicited caller.
  • Report a scam like this to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which handles complaints about deceptive or unfair business practices. To file a complaint, visit http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/contact.shtm or call 1-877-FTC-HELP.
