Industry Specific Phishing Scams

No matter what line of work you’re in, there’s a scammer waiting to target you with a phishing attempt.

Who Is It Targeting:  Individuals who work in specific fields

What Is It:  Phishing scams that are tailor-made to fit your type of business or industry

What Are They After: By now, most consumers have at least heard of phishing or the practice of sending out scam notices to lots of people in the hope that someone will take the bait. But as more people become aware of the tactic, scammers have to shift gears and get a little more creative.

In this particular report, a lawyer outlined the different ways attorneys have been targeted by scammers who employ genuine-sounding legal terms to come across as legitimate. But the truth is, this can happen in any field.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • If you ever receive any kind of email or message telling you to click the link or open the enclosed attachment, DON’T.
  • If you have reason to believe the link or attachment might actually be legitimate, still contact the sender in a separate email or phone call to confirm it.
  • Be watchful for communications that appear to be genuine but actually contain grammar and spelling mistakes or misused industry jargon.
  • If you’re told to follow key instructions in the email, such as changing a password or account number, get verbal confirmation before you do it.
