Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) Scam

Scammers are posing as the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in order to collect sensitive information.

Who Is It Targeting: Nationwide

What Is It:  The Identity Theft Resource Center has been receiving complaints from consumers reporting fake calls from the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Scammers are posing as employees from IC3 and claiming that cybercriminals have the victim’s information. The scammers then ask victims to provide personal information in order to clear up the crime. In some instances, the scammers ask for money to clear up any crimes committed in the victim’s name and if they do not oblige, the victim is threatened with the possibility of being arrested.

What Are They After: Personal information, money

How Can You Avoid It:

  • The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is a legitimate organization that works to fight cybercrime. Individuals who believe they may be a victim of a scam should file a complaint with the IC3 at ic3.gov
  • Do not give personal information over the phone to when you didn’t initiate the call. Stay safe by hanging up the phone and directly contacting the agency to verify the caller’s legitimacy.

If you think you may be a victim of identity theft, contact the Identity Theft Resource Center for toll-free, no-cost assistance at (888) 400-5530. Find more information about current scams and alerts here.
