Sandy "Build it Back" Scam

Superstorm Sandy Victims are being targeted by scammers.

Who Is It Targeting: Residents of Galena, Illinois

What Is It:  Scammers are posing as representatives of “Build it Back,” a recovery initiative for rebuilding homes of Hurricane Sandy victims, in order to steal their personal identifying information (PII). The scammers call those enrolled in Build it Back, identify themselves as administrators of the program, then request the victim’s personal information in order to use it for identity theft.

What Are They After: PII.

How Can You Avoid It:  Never give your social security or bank account information to those who call you unsolicited, even if you think the organization they claim to represent is legitimate.  If you think you’ve been targeted by this scam, you are urged to call the Department of Investigation’s Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fraud Hotline at (212) 825-5959.
