Sheriff’s Association Scam

Thieves in the Galena, Illinois area are pretending to represent the local Sheriff’s Association in order to solicit fraudulent donations.

Who Is It Targeting: Residents of Galena, Illinois

What Is It:  Authorities in the Galena area are warning residents about a new twist on an old scam.  In this version of the con, residents are called by someone pretending to represent the local Sheriff’s Association.  They then solicit the victims for donations.

What Are They After: Cash, Wire Transfers.

How Can You Avoid It:  According to authorities, the Sheriff’s association does not conduct over the phone donation solicitations so anyone calling and representing themselves as such is automatically a scammer.  If you receive a communication like this one and are unsure of its validity please hang up and contact local law enforcement directly to make sure you’re really dealing with a legitimate actor.
