Consumer Protection Day

"Don’t Be A Target…Get Informed” was the theme for the 2007 Consumer Protection Day.   This event was sponsored by the County of San Diego, and spearheaded by San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. 

More than 1,200 people attended this 3rd Annual Event – and the Identity Theft Resource Center was right in the middle of it!  Other exhibitors included the California Attorney General's Office, the California Department of Consumer Affairs, the California Department of Motor Vehicles Investigators and the Federal Trade Commission.

The event began ahead of schedule and people flocked to our table right inside the front doors. Scam videos and handouts practically flew off the table and we realized early on we should have doubled up on our supplies!!

Fellowes, manufacturers of "The World's Toughest Shredders" and an ITRC sponsor, provided six shredders as raffle prizes for the event.  The shredders were a big draw, and kept attendees at the event throughout the day.  Fellowes is a very proactive, community oriented company, and provides ongoing support to the Identity Theft Resource Center.

ITRC Executive Director Jay Foley drew the names of the six raffle  winners, who were thrilled to win something which could help them fight against identity theft.

ITRC Staff answered a wide variety of questions from interested consumers who were attending the event to become more aware of current day scams and identity theft trends.  Events like this indicate a growing awareness of the impact of scams and identity theft, and the need to take personal action to protect oneself.

The ITRC welcomed the opportunity to support the County’s efforts to educate consumers by participating in this event.  San Diego County and the District Attorney's Office are continuously involved in consumer protection, as well as enforcement.  Thank You!
