ITRC National Grant Recipient
Able to expand services for victims of identity theft by grant from DOJ

The Identity Theft Resource Center recently announced that it has received a grant from the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs (OJP).   The $500,000 grant will cover a two-year period.  The grant is part of $1.7 million given to four non-profit programs in the United States that provide direct assistance to victims of identity theft and financial fraud.  This award comes as a direct result of the President’s Task Force on Identity Theft, established in May of 2006.   More than 40 organizations competed for this grant.

The four grants given were:

  • $500,000 to the IdentityTheft Resource Center, a national non-profit organization that provides identity theft victim assistance at no charge
  • $500,000 to the Texas Legal Services Center, a state support office and regional victim services provider for operation of the Victims Initiative for Counseling, Advocacy, and Restoration of the Southwest
  • $500,000 to the Maryland Crime Victims' Resource Center
  • $200,000 to Atlanta Victim Assistance Inc., an organization serving the needs of both victims and witnesses.

The four recipients of the grant will collaboratively expand their efforts to assist victims through the recovery process, to problem-solve cases that may be unique or extremely difficult to resolve and to work together as a team to diminish the impact identity theft has on the lives of victims.   The ITRC truly looks forward to our new partnership to combat identity theft.

"The financial toll exacted by identity theft can be as devastating and emotionally traumatic as violent crime," said Cybele Daley, acting assistant Attorney General for OJP. "The Department of Justice recognizes the tragic consequences to those affected by identity theft and is committed to tackling this problem by giving victim service organizations and local law enforcement the resources to provide a measure of relief to victims."
