ITRC Recognizes Pro-active Approach to Credit Freezes
ITRC recognizes TrustedID’s IDFreeze as a
pro-active option to reduce the threat of identity theft

A credit or security freeze is one of the proactive tools consumers can now have as part of their arsenal to stop the issuance of NEW credit cards. This process prohibits the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) from releasing credit reports to lenders without the consumer’s direct permission.

The Identity Theft Resource Center® recognizes TrustedID’s IDFreeze product and will help to make consumers aware of the product on the TrustedID website, www.trustedid.com/html/identity_theft_protection_products_003.php

“We’re pleased to provide identity theft victims information regarding TrustedID’s IDFreeze, which enables them to conveniently place freezes on all their credit reports. This is a proactive way to minimize the risk to consumers,” says Jay Foley, ITRC Executive Director.

While credit or security freezes do not stop all types of identity theft, it is a powerful tool that concerned consumers and identity theft victims might want to use. Consumers should understand that while a credit freeze may protect against the opening of new accounts, a freeze will not protect against fraudulent takeover of existing accounts or other types of identity theft. It will, however, stop the consumer’s ability to get instant credit because the freeze has to be lifted first. With the freeze in place, it makes it nearly impossible for a thief to get any kind of credit in the consumer’s name.
