I am sending you a letter acknowledging the Identity Theft Resource Center. I have given it a couple of months to see what would happen and sure enough, the letters and phone calls have stopped. I have about another month before the 90 days are up and I can check my credit reports to assure that AAA Credit has been removed, but I wanted to get this letter out to you. I also want to say again that I appreciate all your help, and Brendan's, and if there is anything I can do to be of assistance to you guys, please let me know. (Complete letter)

I really don't think I would even be halfway functioning today without you, because as you know, I was (still am) "frozen" and over-whelmed, by the devastating home burglary in which the identity information for our family was stolen. Thank you. You have an excellent website and this article in particular is very insightful. When my husband was the victim of ID theft, he went through every emotion Dr. Nelson described. I was too mad and too busy straightening things out to have time to "feel", until it was all over. Then my major emotion was satisfaction. The Fresno Police Department worked with me and we had three arrests, three convictions, and three offenders who are serving prison sentences right now. It still makes me smile.

Examples of Scams: FBI Inheritance Scam

A message posing as from the FBI informing the recipient that a large some of money in England has been willed to them. All they have to do to get it is wire a sum of money to England.

The FBI does not alert US citizens of trusts or inheritances created in foreign countries. The FBI does not have offices outside of the United States.

Use of Children's SSNs

Since the 1980's, children in the US have been issued Social Security numbers (SSN) at

birth. However, by law, they cannot be offered credit until they reach the age of 18. A child's SSN is therefore dormant for credit purposes for 18 years. Opportunists have found novel ways to abuse these "dormant" numbers. Years ago, the ITRC envisioned a simple solution to this problem - the Minors 17-10 Database.

If you see an ad, especially in CraigsList, selling a Credit Protection Number, credit privacy number or secondary credit number, do NOT respond. These are scams. They are either bogus Social Security numbers or ones belonging to other people. It is illegal to use any number other than your own Social Security number when requesting credit, getting a job or for any other purpose. Many belong to children who will be badly harmed in the future. AP Story

for the first six months of 2010. Unfortunately, hundreds of breaches have been veiled from the public, delayed in publication, or not listed on any public lists. The question still remains: How many breaches and victims are there?
