A company contacted me about an account that I did not open what should I do?

I was just notified by a credit issuer or a bank that someone has opened or is attempting to open an account in my name. What should I do?

1. Who did you speak with at the company? Was it customer service or the fraud department? You should ask to speak to the fraud department on all identity theft matters.

2. Did you ask what process the company requires to clear this account from your name? This most likely will be a copy of the police report, a fraud affidavit, copies of two separate utility bills, and a copy of your drivers license.

3. Contact the three major credit reporting agencies to place a fraud alert on your credit reports, and order your complementary credit report. Please review your credit reports to identify all fraudulent accounts.

4. Contact your local law enforcement to make a police report. You will want to order a copy of that police report.

5. Send a fraud affidavit package certified with return receipt. This fraud package most likely will include a police report, a fraud affidavit, a copy of a utility bill, and a copy of your driver’s license. You will also want to request copies of the application and the transaction records, a letter of clearance, and for this account to be removed from your credit reports.

6. Give the company 20 days to respond.
