Identity Theft Consumer Guide

Identity Theft Resource Center BBB Business Review

For Law Enforcement

Since the very beginning, ITRC has worked with law enforcement agencies.  We recognize that in dealing with this crime you are limited by both budget and staffing.  Also, in many jurisdictions advanced training in identity theft investigation is non-existent.

This section includes information we believe you will find helpful, both in your work, and in communicating with victims.  ITRC understands that due to the nature of this crime, many cases go uninvestigated or unsolved.  Unfortunately, victims do not realize what is necessary to bring an offender to justice.  Effective communication between law enforcement and the victim is often the difference between secondary wounding, or a cooperative victim who helps the case go forward.

Officers and law enforcement personnel will find fact sheets and solutions in this section, as well as in the victim and consumer sections.  These are tools that will guide and assist you in understanding and dealing with the victims of identity theft.

Law Enforcement, at all levels, has the permission of the Identity Theft Resource Center to reproduce any of the fact sheets or solutions on the ITRC Website, for either victim or consumer use within your jurisdiction. We do suggest, however, that you not mass produce copies, due to frequent updating of information.   We would also ask that you notify us if you plan to use our materials.

If we can be of service to you in any way - training, presentation material, information, victim support - do not hesitate to contact us either by phone or email.  We look forward to continuing our efforts with the law enforcement community.
