As of June 30, 2009 the total number of breaches reported by the ITRC is 268.

 

Identity Theft The Aftermath 2008
The ITRC recently released a significant report on the impact of identity theft victimization:  Identity Theft: The Aftermath 2008.  With six years of victim responses and shared experiences, this information provides a unique insight into the crime that may not apparent to other parties.
Data Breaches Undeterred by Laws or Common Sense
Malicious attacks on databases and incidence of paper breaches have reached an all time high percentage in the first half of 2009, as reported by the Identity Theft Resource Center.  This is based upon the 250 data breaches reported by the ITRC as of Monday, June 15.  Having maintained a data breach list since 2005, the ITRC knows that this is just the tip of the iceberg, as many breaches are not made public.
2008 Data Breach Totals Soar
Reports of data breaches increased dramatically in 2008. The Identity Theft Resource Center’s 2008 breach report reached 656 reported breaches at the end of 2008, reflecting an increase of 47% over last year’s total of 446.
SCAM ALERT: 5/19/09

SCAM ALERT: The Nigerian Scam, in which someone asks for help in transferring money, is now "coming" from countries in Asia.  Any email asking for you to help to move money, reship packages, or collect money for a company or person anywhere in the world should be considered a scam.

In February 2009, the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) conducted a survey seeking answers about consumer awareness of data exposure breaches, how they feel about the safety of their personal information when used online, as well as their level of interest in improving their online information safety.

Just as you would monitor your health status or your credit status, you should review your identity score to see if fraudsters may be misusing your personal information. My ID Score is a great resource for consumers who are concerned about the unauthorized use of their identity.
