Scam: BBB Impersonators

Who Is It Targeting: Virginia Residents

What Is It: There have been reports from individuals, in Virginia, who are receiving phone calls from scammers claiming to be representatives of the Better Business Bureau.  The scammers are telling the targets that they have unclaimed lottery winnings, but in order to receive the winnings they must first pay a release fee for the transfer of the money to take place. This is an older scam, but it is unique that the scammers are impersonating representatives from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) which they are undoubtedly doing to gain the trust of the caller.

What Are They After: Direct Payment

How Can You Avoid It: You should never have to pay to obtain money that you win in a lottery. This is sure sign of a scam.  In addition, the BBB will never be contacting individuals about unclaimed lottery winnings. If either of these things occur during a phone call, you should simply hang up.
