“Hoefler Text Font” Pop-Up Warning

Don’t click that box! That pop-up warning actually installs a virus!

Who Is It Targeting: Tech users

What Is It: A virus scam that appears to be a warning box

What Are They After: Google Chrome users, beware. A new malware threat has been uncovered that installs a virus when you click it, thinking that it’s a warning message. The “Hoefler Text Font cannot be found” message on the warning box actually installs malware on your Windows based computer. Mac users have not been found to be vulnerable to this particular threat yet.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • If a popup box, flashing ad, or warning message appears, there’s a good chance it’s fake.
  • Before clicking the button, look for an exit “X” and get rid of it that way.
  • If you’re unsure, you can also press and hold CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up your Task Manager and exit your web browser that way.
