It’s scary to think you might be in trouble with the law…again.

Who Is It Targeting: Individuals who’ve recently bonded out of jail

What Is It: Phishing scam from a phony police officer

What Are They After: Arrest and bail/bond reports are public record, and one town is already being warned about a scammer posing as a police officer, targeting recently arrested individuals. The scammer calls people who’ve recently bonded out of jail, states that he is a police officer, and demands further payment for some unexplained fine. Failure to pay the new amount will supposedly result in your arrest.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • In any phishing scam, it’s important that you go to the source.
  • If you are ever contacted and asked for money unexpectedly, hang up and call the company or agency directly using a number you have verified for yourself.
  • Report the matter and find out if there is any truth to the claim.
