We’ve all seen coin boxes to help a needy child or an abused animal, but some of these are far from charitable.

Who Is It Targeting: Consumers who enter places of business

What Is It: Coin giving boxes that claim to help a charity

What Are They After: A lot of businesses have boxes or jars on their counters, strategically located near the cash register, where generous customers can throw in some coins to help a chronically ill child or an abused animal. Unfortunately, police have now found a number of these boxes in Montgomery County, MD, that are actually nothing more than for-profit scams.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • Your generosity will be far more effective if you research the cause you wish to support and mail a tax-deductible donation.
  • Not only are the coin boxes barely effective sources of funding, there’s very little proof that the money actually makes its way to the charity it claims to represent.
  • You can investigate charities online through the BBB Wise Giving Alliance and select organizations that have high standards for legitimate work with your funds.
