Date: 06/12/2017

Don’t be taken in by “easy money, flexible hours” messages.

Who Is It Targeting: College students, graduates

What Is It: Phishing scam that even comes with a fake check

What Are They After: The Better Business Bureau has already received a number of reports of a phishing scam that targets job seekers. By sending the spam emails to university (.edu) email addresses, the scammers are specifically going after students and recent graduates. The promises of easy money and flexible hours that work around your class schedule are too good for many students to pass up.

There are a lot of ways employment scams can manifest, so it’s important to be mindful a few of the more common approaches.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • Never provide your complete identity in the application process.
  • Never cash a check for more than the amount owed, then refund the difference to the sender.
  • Only use vetted sources for job seeking and employment.
