Expired Software Scam

Much like tech support scams, calls about expired software are hunting for victims.

Who Is It Targeting: Computer users

What Is It: Phishing scam that informs you your software key has expired

What Are They After: Much like famous tech support scams in which a caller steals your data and money under the guise of repairing your computer, an expired software scam is after the same thing. A scammer contacts you in some way and informs you that your Windows security code has expired, or some similar excuse. They ask for information about you, payment for a new subscription, or even access to your computer itself.

How Can You Avoid It:

• Never give anyone your personal information or your money if they contact you without prior notice.
• If you have a question related to your computer or your software, contact the developer through an approved customer service number.
• Never give anyone remote access to your computer unless you initiated the service request.
