Thieves are pretending to represent government agencies offering “free” money in order to solicit up-front fees.

What Is It:  This old scam is resurfacing and targeting victims across the United States. Thieves claim that the person has won free money but they must pay fees in order to receive the “free” money. The Identity Theft Resource Center has received numerous calls from victims who have paid anywhere from $200-$5000 dollars to scammers.

What Are They After: MoneyGrams, Wire Transfers

How Can You Avoid It:  If you receive a communication like this one and are unsure of its validity please hang up and contact the government agency directly to make sure you’re dealing with a legitimate actor. Report a government grant scam to 800-447-8477. Read more information online at
