What Is It:   Consumers are often more vulnerable during natural disasters, like hurricanes, and find themselves falling for price gouging, in which a seller greatly increases the cost of essential items. In Florida, for example, there is a price-gouging law in place that specifically prohibits the extreme increase in the price of items such as food, ice, gas, hotels, lumber and water.

What Are They After: Money

How Can You Avoid It:

  • Anyone who suspects of price gouging in the state of Florida should file a complaint by calling 1-866-9-NO-SCAM
  • File a complaint of a scam on the BBB’s scam tracker:
  • Report it to your local police
