File an Identity Theft Police Report

When you find out you are a victim of identity theft, the first step you should take is filing an Identity Theft Report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If the following is true, you should also file an identity theft police report with the police/sheriff department closest to you:

  • You know the identity thief, or have other information that could help a police investigation
  • An identity thief used your name in a traffic stop or any encounter with police, or
  • A creditor, debt collector or someone else affected by the identity theft insists that you produce a police report

If the crime was committed in another city/state, contact law enforcement where the identity theft occurred. They may not be able to accept an identity theft report if you are not physically present or a resident there, so you still may need to contact your local law enforcement to file an identity theft police report then ask them to forward your report to that jurisdiction for investigation.

When you file your identity theft police report, bring the following:

  • Your state-issued ID or passport to confirm your identity
  • Your Identity Theft Report with the FTC
  • Any and all documentation you have regarding your identity theft case

Obtain official copies of your identity theft police report; a fee may be charged for each copy. The amount of time it will take to receive your report will vary. Make sure to keep an official copy for yourself in a protected place. When contacting other entities regarding your identity theft case, some may require official copies of your identity theft police report while others will accept copies you made.

Amend your identity theft report to include any new information you obtain as it relates to your case.
