The Identity Theft Resource Center is available to consumers twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, thanks to the generous donations to our non-profit organization. We provide up-to-date information on current threats in order to prevent a personal security breach, and support and advice following the loss of your identity.

But now there’s a way you can help with the click of a button. Our Thunderclap campaign needs your tweets and posts!

This Data Privacy Day (January 28th), we want to share a message far and wide: Smartphones aren’t all that smart when it comes to your privacy – they only do what you tell them to do! We want to remind everyone to put a lock on their smartphone. You can help us blast this message by supporting our Thunderclap campaign:

So what is a Thunderclap?

“Thunderclap is a tool that lets a message be heard when you and your friends say it together. Think of it as an ‘online flash mob.’ Join a Thunderclap, and you and others will share the same message at the same time, spreading an idea through Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr that cannot be ignored.”

Now, the ITRC will be the first ones to tell you that you must be very careful of social media activity and that you must read the terms of service and privacy policies. Those are available right here, but Thunderclap does not send out spammy messages to your friends or contacts and does not infringe on your privacy. How can we be sure? The FTC has conducted a Privacy Assessment that you can read.

So how does participating in something like this campaign help us?

You’re spreading the word, with a big boost from Thunderclap. If we reach our supporter goal of 100 people who share a tweet or post for our organization, our messages get spread to an even wider audience of followers we wouldn’t otherwise reach. And as the information in our annual data breach report tells us, raising awareness of better personal data safety and online practices is the best way to prevent identity theft. We also just want to make sure that everyone knows we’re here to help if an identity is compromised, and with your help, we can do it.

Here’s what we need you to do: go to THIS CAMPAIGN PAGE and donate a tweet or post. That’s it. You click on the link that says to share this on Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr (all three would be nice, too!), and on January 28th at 10:30am PST, the message will go out from all supporter accounts. We only have a few days to reach our support goal, and all it takes is a click. You’ll be helping us spread the word about data protection and personal security, and helping consumers know where to go for help. Thank you in advance!
