Scammers are targeting individuals by phone in order to collect money for a virtual kidnapping.
Who Is It Targeting: Citizens in Colorado
What Is It: Citizens in Colorado are being warned about a virtual kidnapping phone scam. The scammers claim to be a medical response team and ask the individual if they have relatives living within the area. The scammers then inform the individuals that their relative has hit a gang member by car and will be kidnapped unless they make payment. Victims of this scam then transfer money to the scammers.
What Are They After: Money orders, wire transfers
How Can You Avoid It: This scam is similar to the common “Grandparent Scam” which plays on the victim’s emotions by making them feel distressed about their relatives. If you receive a phone call like this, write down the phone number and report it to the police. You can also check-in with your relative for reassurance. If you believe you may have given the scammers personal information, call and speak to a Victim Advisor at the Identity Theft Resource Center for free help at 888.400.5530.
