Scammers are asking residents to complete surveys in order to use check fraud.
Who Is It Targeting: Residents of Anderson County in South Carolina.
What Is It: Residents in the Anderson County region of South Carolina are reporting receiving a poorly worded letter requesting completion of a survey about Wal-Mart. These packages are sent USPS Priority Mail and also contain checks for the completion of the survey. However, the checks are actually fake and lead into a similar check cashing scam which is common. The checks seemingly come from a legitimate bank in the region making the scam all the more believable.
What Are They After: Wire Transferred Funds
How Can You Avoid It: If you receive a letter like this, report it to your local USPS office. You should not engage in the survey nor cash the check. If you have already done so, please call the Identity Theft Resource Center at 888.400.5530 to see if there is anything you can do to protect your personal information further.
