Your favorite social media website or app isn’t going to charge you anytime soon.
Who Is It Targeting: WhatsApp users
What Is It: A phishing scam in the form of a chain letter
What Are They After: In this scam, WhatsApp users have reported receiving messages that claim to be from the company. It states that the free messaging app will no longer be free, but that you will be charged for the service. You can “avoid the fee” by forwarding the message to ten or more of your contacts.
How Can You Avoid It:
- In any situation where you receive an unsolicited text, email, or phone call that claims to be from a company, be cautious: it could be spoofed.
- If there’s a sudden, dramatic change to the way a major platform works, you will receive better notice than just a text message.
- If you are ever threatened with account suspension or fees, or if you’re ever required to forward something to ten people, that is a sure sign of a scam.
