A scam is circulating on WhatsApp promising free flight tickets for completing a bogus survey.

Who Is It Targeting: WhatsApp Users

What Is It:  Cybercriminals are amping up their scam efforts this holiday season as they hope to catch consumers off guard while looking for deals online. A scam has gone viral on WhatsApp inviting users to complete a survey in order to receive free flight tickets from Emirates airline. Once they have completed the survey, the individual must share it with 10 more friends to receive their tickets. The individual is redirected to a new domain to “confirm their details” and must upgrade their software to the “latest version” in order to complete the process, which leaves them with malicious software on their device and shattered dreams of a relaxing vacation.

What Are They After: Personal Information, financial account information

How Can You Avoid It:

  • Survey scams can be posed from any brand. If an offer is too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Do not click on random links associated with an offer.
  • Always search for the offer online to see if it has already been reported as a scam.
  • Read the terms and conditions before participating in a survey to avoid oversharing information. Be weary if an online contest does not have a privacy policy.
  • If you receive a scam like this, report it to the platform from where it was received (i.e. WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.)
