Scam: Drunk Driving Call
Who Is It Targeting: West Michigan Residents
What Is It: Individuals are receiving phone calls from individuals claiming that the target’s family member or loved one has been involved in a drunk driving accident. The callers then state that they will not contact the police if the target sends money via western union as a sort of bribe. The scam has been reported in the past using prepaid money cards and may have different payment forms involved than just Western Union. The Kent County Sheriff has issued a warning on the scam which is targeting residents of West Michigan.
What Are They After: Direct Payment
How Can You Avoid It: If someone calls and states that someone you know has been in a drunk driving accident and asks for a bribe to keep from contacting law enforcement, you should hang up. You should then call the loved one in question to confirm that they are not in trouble. If you have sent the money via western union already, most likely you will not able to recoup your losses.
