Anytime something makes the news, you can bet there will be scammers waiting to take advantage.

What Is It: Phishing scam based off of legislation changes

What Are They After: Whenever news headlines break, there’s a good chance a scammer will come along behind it, ready to steal your money and your information. Medical marijuana is making headlines around the country, and there have already been reports of scams involving cold-call salesmen, informing you that you’re eligible for your own prescription. The scams have involved requests for money to purchase eligibility cards, demands for Social Security numbers, and more.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • Stay on top of your own medical care by getting solid advice from your doctor.
  • Never give out your information to a caller, no matter why they claim to need it.
  • When in doubt, hang up and contact the company or agency yourself.
