Amazon Order Cancellation Scam

Date: 06/22/2017

Did you receive a cancellation order from Amazon but didn’t purchase anything recently?

Who Is It Targeting: Online shoppers

What Is It: Phishing scam

What Are They After: Phishing scams can take many forms, but one common method is to “spoof” an existing company’s communication by cutting and pasting their logo onto an email template. That way, it’s easier to trick the recipient into thinking this is a genuine communication.

A recent wave of phishing attacks is masquerading as an email from Amazon, informing you that your order has been canceled. That seems like a legitimate reason to contact you, and with the high rate of consumers who shop on the popular site, it’s a safe bet that the scammers will land on a victim who actually believes the email. When you click the link in the email to see which of your items has been canceled, you’re asked for personal information or a malicious virus.

How Can You Avoid It:

  • Even if it looks legitimate, it’s better to go to your actual account on the company’s website to verify any concerns.
