- The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) recently released its annual Trends in Identity Report, which looks at the identity crimes committed against individuals as reported by the victims of those crimes from April 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025.
- According to the report, the ITRC saw a 31-percentage-point decrease in reported identity crimes compared to the previous year. However, the number of people experiencing multiple identity-related concerns compared to contacts year-over-year increased from 15 percent to 24 percent.
- Most reported misuse involved misuse of accounts, including account takeover (53 percent) and new accounts created using an individual’s personal information (36 percent).
- Impersonation scams were the top reported type of scam to the ITRC, a 148-percentage point increase year-over-year. Scammers typically impersonated a general business (51 percent of impersonation scams) or a financial institution (21 percent of impersonation scams).

The report examines trends based on contacts from victims and individuals seeking prevention information who have contacted the ITRC between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025. For the report, the ITRC examined the wide range of identity crimes, including identity theft, fraud and scams, as well as attempted crimes.
