Understanding Identity Crimes in Asian Communities
The way individuals use, maintain, protect, and recover their identities varies due to different factors, including cultural influences and language barriers. The ITRC seeks to understand identity crimes in Asian communities and address the challenges experienced by identity theft victims who are members of San Diego’s Asian communities by providing culturally responsive and linguistically appropriate resources.
Based on information self-reported by victims to the ITRC, some of the identity crimes in Asian communities include scams that expose personal information, specifically the Google Voice scam (39% of victim cases) and job or employment scams (10% of victim cases). Victims within the Asian community in San Diego are also experiencing misuse of their identity, in particular with identity thieves taking over banking and checking accounts (43%), credit card accounts (21%) and utility/phone accounts (14%). Elders and seniors in the community account for 1/3 of the reports of identity compromise and misuse.
